I enjoyed this for its clever plot, mild suspense and obviously well-researched characterisations. Descriptions of the various participants, their language, attitudes and behaviour, and the complex inter-relationships give a good feel for mid-18th century society from the aristocracy to the lower classes. A very easy read with good illustrations. This is one of three books by the author which share some of the major characters. They each stand on their own but they fit together well, especially if read in their chronological sequence: Poker Face, Whose Death and Iced Tart.
