ByAbdul Zubair

The emergence of Zahirite School in the third century of Islamic era was the outcome of developments going back to the inception of Islam. The mission of the Prophet Muhammad has given rise to a conception of law as the embodiment of the divine will. With the death of the Prophet the community was obliged to carryon its own iterpretation of law on the basis of closed canon of revelation. The interpretive efforts of early generations culminated in the work of great jurists. Ibn Hazm's Mulakhkhas Ibtal al-Qiyas.. confronts us with some of the major issues arisen with Islamic tradition. It also puts us in touch with an approach to the sources of law that prevailed in earliest Islam. The present generation must deal a fresh with the problems of its time on the basis of the recognizedsources just as the great Imams wrestled with the problems of their time.
