The set-up: a grand conspiracy by a mysterious cabal plotting the fate of humanity. Then there's 20-yr-old prodigy Gerrid, who sees himself as the pioneer of a virtual reality technology that offers a more immersive experience – a simulation of real life only better, although he seems to be motivated just as much by self-gratification as the betterment of humanity; he even uses an ‘imager’ to scan the woman he desires. But here’s where things get interesting. His plans are thwarted; the woman is not who she appears to be, and it seems Gerrid is being manipulated. He is warned of the conspiracy by investigative journalist Elekka Nushak, who demonstrates a preternatural ability to uncover secrets. In fact Gerrid ends up being arrested for possessing ‘illegal experientials’, and incarcerated. From there, he has little choice than to be signed up to the conspiracy, whereby he becomes part of a team. Born of that is an AI that constantly questions the nature of its existence and evolves... More > into something uncontrollable. There are moments here for humor as well as philosophical meanderings. I even began to feel sympathy for the somewhat hapless Gerrid later on, as he struggles to find a nobler purpose and escape his entrapment. There are several plot strands seen through the eyes of many characters. The other protagonist is factory worker Jimmy Findral, from 2013 who is taken into the future by ‘non-interfering’ aliens and becomes embroiled in the network; his mission to seek out Gerrid. He seems to serve a purpose as a counterpoint to Gerrid’s hubris. In one strand there is a man who enjoys unusual good luck and is tempted into (virtual) infidelity with his fantasy woman only to discover it was not what he hoped it would be. I wonder if the author was trying to make a broader point about how a utopian existence can never be compatible with human nature, or maybe it’s about the mythology of heaven. Either way, there are no heavy handed lectures. But there are many themes, and lots of ideas typically of a science fiction novel, exploring the nature of Virtual Reality & AI. And more than enough future science/tech concepts for the SF aficionado. But ultimately what redeems it for me is the way so many of the plot strands tie together, even if in a somewhat contrived way.But ultimately what redeems it for me is the way so many of the plot strands tie together, even if in a somewhat contrived way. As a free e-book it achieves more than many you’d pay for!< Less
