Luminous Washi Lanterns was an interactive paper installation by students of Rhode Island School of Design with Architect Aki Ishida for Concert for Japan, a fundraising event held at the Japan Society in New York on April 9, 2011 for the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. Inspired by traditional Japanese lantern festivals, the Installation explores the use of light and shadow in Japanese architecture and celebrates the ephemeral, fleeting nature of materials traditionally used in Japanese rituals and events. The installation was built by hundreds of participants over the course of the day and included handwritten wishes to the earthquake victims.
The book documents the design process that took place in Providence, Rhode Island and the final installation in NYC. For more information, visit http://www.japansociety.org/content.cfm/luminous_lanterns.
