"Hello Insanity by Stewart McKie" I feel very privileged to have read the first published work of Al Bloom, a talent of prodigious proportions. I began to read 'Goodbye Sanity' at the end with the 'Invention of the Pogo Stick' - for years my preferred method for training my digestive tract as an alternative to porridge. As I read the book, origami style, I discovered that Al has a great talent for names: Who can forget Nelford Fanning and Hewlard Packlett? Al is a breath of fresh air in a world of christmas trees dangling from rear view mirrors. Unlike A L Kennedy he does not rely on italics to reveal the inner dialogue of his characters, nor does he rely on the titillating cock and balls style of Booker winner Annie Enright. Instead has mined all his experience as a cinema usherette (that was before the sex change) to surface a world where cab drivers circle your destination 15 times because they were trained as an airline pilot. This is a laugh aloud funny book and just... More > the thing to annoy your spouse with when they are watching their favourite TV show, anticipating sex or have a headache. If I had to pick a favourite part, other than that bit between my big toe and the next one (what is that called?), it would have to be the devastating 'Critics Critique Critics'. Whilst on a 2 week sabbatical in the Scrubs (it was a prison, before becoming the set for the TV show) I read Kierkegaard in Danish, but even he could not come up with this pithy line describing the luminous yet sustainable musician Roland Du Jour: "His compulsive style of speech, during which an effulgent flaring of the nostrils combines with a series of discordant slurps, often recalls the semi-delirious ramblings of an outpatient." As a sidebar, I worked in an outpatients once as a doorman to protect the nurses from randy glaucoma suffering merchant seamen. Al's book is the verbal equivalent of the excellent visual compendium entitled "Scouts in Bondage" another of my current favourite works. His book is a veritable Burgessian tolchock in the yarbles for some of the pretentious rubbish that passes for literature in this, the year of the toadstool. Buy the first edition now before Diablo Cody writes the screenplay and Al becomes yet another piece of masticated Hollywood flotsam.< Less
