I got the book, partly because it is tagged with self-discovery and narcissism here on, and I enjoy stories set in France in general. After finishing it, it took a while before I got it. The characters are so one-dimensional (probably intentional, not necessarily a bad thing) that it is easy to jump to the conclusion that the main character, Karen, is the "good" one, while the others are the narcissists she encounter. Karen is always unable to have working relationships and everything is always the other characters' fault. But then it hit me, it must be the other way around: the one-dimensionalism is there to make the reader discover how the world looks from a narcissist's perspective. The main character, and top-notch narcissist, Karen, describes herself as very intelligent, having a toned body, fiercly independent etc. The people she encounters are all bad, they are unable to have normal relationships and only know how to manipulate and use her. In fact, even men... More > in general are described as only looking for silly and dumb women. I probably would not have gotten it if it wasnt't for the details in her latest love-story, the poor Swede. Here comes this upright gentleman who does everything naturally and politely. Yet, still is cast in a bad light. While the story itself fizzles and is long-winded, even for this long short-story, this insight into narcissism and the "view from within" is worth the read. If only there would be less purple prose about cats.< Less
