Prince Paskudnyak and the other colorful characters of the Kingdom of Razzmatazz, are engagingly delightful! It is refreshing to encounter princes and princesses, kings and queens in modern children’s fiction. Alan Cooper in Prince Paskudnyak and the Giant Bats, has revived this dying genre. His prose is whimsical; and effortlessly reminds us of the children we once were. More important, it reminds the children that still are, that childhood is lovely and full of wonder. This story, after all, is for them. It captures and animates the imagination in a way that is often elusive in this era of the Nintendo DS. Marcia Moxam Comrie is co-founder and columnist of the Southeast Queens PRESS and the mother of two teenagers.

My son enjoyed this so very much at age 12. The storyline includes endearing characters and is told with wit and humor that moves the tale right along. Valuable lessons about life are discovered by the young reader (and his father) as the plot unfolds, without really trying. He and I are anticipating the sequel, which we hope will be out soon.
