This photobook is a compilation of images taken during my drift in the space of Elephant & Castle, situated in South London. The purpose of this journey was to examine the issues the borough was facing at that time and to carry out an intervention scheme in an attempt to find a solution. As a result, an awareness poster was produced.

"Book Review" My name is Aviv Ron; I am a third year Digital Photography Student at London South Bank University and Alana Lang’s class mate. Although this review is part of our course requirement I chose her book because of my personal interest in spatial photography and the area of Elephant & Castle. The book “Drifting in Elephant & Castle” present a series of over 60 images that were taken by Alana Lang as her spatial research of the Elephant & Castle area in London. This research was part of an art intervention project that concentrated on the proposal to regenerate the area. The spatial research method used for this project was a “Derive”, which is the practice of “drifting” as a means to explore urban space without the shackles of habits and routine (Wikipedia “Derive”). In practice it means that you go where ever your mind takes you to, or you drift with the experiences of the space. The images in the book are organised in chronological order. Each page... More > is a full bleed image and as you flick through the pages you feel the effect of movement. The journey begins on the platform in the Elephant & Castle tube station. It continues to the pedestrian underground beneath the big roundabout, move up towards street level and into the small outside market of the shopping centre. Then it goes inside and around the structure where the journey ends. This small area is the pumping heart of the Elephant & Castle where tens of thousands of commuters pass through each day, two major universities are located and hundreds of small businesses are operating as the commercial centre of the area. The space is packed with social interaction and visual spectacles, it represents all that is unique about the area and it is also the focal point for the need to regenerate and modernise this space. Alana’s colourful images capture the visual intensity of the area with saturated pictures of structures and scenarios. By looking at detail such as rubbish on the street, graffiti and the state of decoration Alana observes the general run-down look of the area, which gives a social impression about the space without depicting hardly any people at all. What I most liked about the book is to see Alana’s unique point of view through the experience that the images present. I felt like I was exploring a familiar area but looking through the eyes of someone else.< Less
