The North End

ByAlbert Hobson

As Quiet As It's Kept, in the 1940's and 1950's, before "Black is Beautiful" was recognized, there was a "Colored" section of Kansas City, Kansas that we called "The North End". Older city maps referred to the area as the "Harlem" District. But since we lived at the extreme northeast edge of this district, those of us who lived there referred to this area as "The North End". This is the area where I was born and raised. The North End molded me into the man I strived to become as a young boy - and ultimately made me into the man I am today.
