"Island Life" There are quite a few books published by expats living in Thailand but most are either crime novels or about the sex industry. I guess Garland wrote the most famous book "The Beach" but to my mind and to that of the Thai people that book was very insulting to the Kingdom. The idea that a group of Western misfits deserve the right to steal A part of Thailand and complain about it when they can't do what they wish with it is a bit near-sighted (even for a cartoonist's son) The Thais' were understandbly very upset when it appeared on cinema, and it was indeed banned from being shown on many a cinemaplex in thailand. "My Island" treds on safer grounds. The utopia found in Thailand is more within the narrators head than an exploitation of his surroundings. The narrator jumps off a train in London and decides enough is enough. Heathrow takes him to New York and then New York to Bangkok. He finds himself eventually on Ko Lanta serving beers to the...
