A girl named Elizabeth Field lives in 1860s Gettysburg, Pennsylvania during the Civil War. She is sixteen years old. She is the daughter of the local baker, and works in her father's bakery nearly every day of the week. When working in her father's bakery one day she meets a charming young man named Gabriel Evans. He is seventeen, and she is absolutely infatuated. They get to know each other, and eventually fall in love. When Gabriel leaves to fight for the Union, however, Elizabeth is devastated. While Gabriel is away, she must put her dream of a happy life with him on hold, and must practice extreme patience in order to get through the days without him until the time he comes to visit her again. She continues to hope that one day Gabriel will return safely to her arms.
