Those three decades of strife in Central Europe – an impenetrable web of religious and political turmoil – saw a quarter of all Germans killed, whole regions laid waste, and numberless refugees trying to flee the destruction. Mariana Gryphius was born on the night of 8-9 June 1637 when her home town, Freystadt in Silesia, burned down. An infant refugee, she died on the journey. The final section of Born in Flight sets her epitaph as a lullaby for all child refugees.
