Born in Flight sets three texts dating to the period of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) or in circulation in the German-speaking world at that time. Those three decades of strife in Central Europe – an impenetrable web of religious and political turmoil – saw a quarter of all Germans killed, whole regions laid waste, and numberless refugees trying to flee the destruction.
Mariana Gryphius was born on the night of 8-9 June 1637 when her home town, Freystadt in Silesia, burned down. An infant refugee, she died on the journey. The final section of Born in Flight sets her epitaph as a lullaby for all child refugees.
