Superbe!

I've been studying French for several years, and québécois for the last 3 of those years. Resources on québécois are not that easy to find, but I own pretty much all of them (dictionaries, phrasebooks, histories-of, etc.), in my efforts to hone my accent and vocabulary, and I've done a lot of independent research as well. In the few days since my copy of Le québécois en 10 leçons arrived in the mail I have already realized this is by far the best of them all—in no small part because of the bonus materials, the free audio files which you will have access to after you make your purchase. And if you have found expanding your French understanding to the joual of Québec at all tricky or frustrating, I urge you to make that purchase right away. I might not be willing to give up any of the rest in my library, but I can tell you that if this one is your first purchase of a text on le québécois, you may never need to expand... More > to a full library. Alexandre's writing is clear and practical, his explanations are to-the-point, and when combined with the audio, you will finally be able to master the infinite differences and subtle intricacies of spoken Québec French. Perfect for fine-training your ears and your accent. I did not know of Alexandre's work before grabbing my copy of this book, but I am now the number-one fan of his efforts in 10 leçons. I hope it sells a million. :)< Less

A Book Written by a Fanatic but Accessible to All. I have know about Alex for years having read his numerous posts on language forums. These posts remind me of the zeal of a religious fanatic hell bent on acts of terrorism, but Alex's Passion is language learning and this shows on the forums. A professional translator by day he spends his spare time doing the likes of polyglot challenges and posting on blogs. He is the consummate professional linguist and a Panzer Tank probably could not keep him from his studies. It therefore came as a surprise that this work was accessible to anyone with even a passing interest in linguistics, Canada or Quebec in particular! It really is instructive and accessible at the same time. The book starts with a pronunciation chapter which is well explained and accessible and grammar unique to Quebecois is explained throughout the book. It is great to see such focus on punctuation explained so lucidly and accessibly. Vocabulary and grammar patterns are... More > introduced by chapter and the "pronoms forts" section was particularly interesting. The explanations are clear and there is very little scope for conclusion. The explanation of vocabulary unique to Quebec was fun and the examples entertaining. A web link to PDFs and pronunciation mp3s is hidden away on page 11 and this adds a massive amount to the value of the book for all those computer literate readers, thought those with lesser IT skills can still learn massively from it. The index is comprehensive and vocabulary is easy to search for. This is a great book written by a master linguist which covers Quebec French in a way accessible to everyone and this is no mean feat. Quebecois is different to "normal" French and if you are an Anglophone linguist like me who speaks French reasonably well then I definitely recommend Alex's book to help you communicate with people from Quebec.< Less
