A Murder of Crows

A headstrong shepherd who would sacrifice anything to find his roots. A one-armed swordsman haunted by the disgraceful loss of his knighthood. A fiery young woman who is banished from her family after a terrible tragedy. An ambitious Lord twisted by deep-set insecurities. Around these characters develops a complex world of ordinary, flawed people struggling for order in the face of extraordinary circumstances. Turmoil develops over succession to the throne and religious conflict; one by one, willingly or unwillingly, the characters are pulled into a struggle which increasingly forces them to question their own motives. Indeed, though this book draws upon the romanticism of the archetypal hero’s tale, it is not a world of simple magical solutions, arch-villains, or knights in shining armor. It is a tale painted in shades of gray and driven by loyalty and manipulation, love and hatred, and above all, the human capacity to endure against a world of increasing disorder.

Heard about this through a friend of a friend...6 degrees of separation, eh? Anyway, I loved this book and I was so excited to learn that the author is quite young, like me. Having lived in the UK part of my life, I can definitely see a Celtic/Welsh mythology influence on this book, which is great. It starts similarly to a lot of other fantasy books but soon takes enough twists and turns to make it firmly original. The characters, as well, are unbelievably complex and exciting. So glad to see another young 20-something author take pride in his work and pay such attention to detail (please check out my book, "Sea Lights", when it becomes available!). I am very impressed and inspired. Mark my words, this kid will be famous some day! The reviews on Amazon say what I want to more eloquently, and there are some better pictures of the book, so I'll include the link here: Cheers!

A little slow to get going, tbqh, but once all the threads start to connect it's a very satisfying read. Glad I gave this a chance.
