Six weeks of pedalling, many months of preparations, and many more to recover..! Described as ‘The London to Jerusalem Peace Cycle’ by the organisers; it turned out to be a journey of discovery.. and sore bums! They danced with joy.. and cried with pain. They fell in silence in awe to the people of Foggia. They splashed their arrival to Lake Geneva, and dipped in Italian Mediterranean blue waters. Washed with rain, stoned by hailstone, swayed by wind and scorned by the heat of the sun.. they crossed Europe end-to-end. Welcomed by the excitement and engagement of their recipients along the way, and the disbelief of their final hosts, the Palestinians, they arrived to understand. One week of experiencing the beauty of the land, the generosity of her people and the ugliness of oppression.. The taste of Ma’loubeh and the smell of Jasmine, and the suffocation of a wall, watch towers, dirt ditches and checkpoints. They thought they knew.. now they may..! The journey only... "An extraordinary and inspirational story..." Forget Harry Potter...."Ali Dabbagh and the Crate of Oranges" is a far superior work in every way - intrigue, suspense, horror, sex, drugs and rock and roll - it's all in there. (Well, not the last bit actually but it doesn't leave it lacking). Seriously though, I had the honour of reading an early copy of this and it is a great read - very funny and poignant in equal measure, and truly written from the heart. You'll particularly identify with it if you've taken part in the Peace Cycle, but anyone and everyone will enjoy it, so make sure you get a copy!!! Laura Abraham, The Peace Cycle

"Totally Original presentation - Uplifting to the Spirit" This is an interim preview only, due to being too impatient to let the authors know how much I liked the too short preview; will edit and re-preview when I’ve read the whole book. ) There is nothing I like better than total originality when it comes to writing a book, and this is the real Mccoy in this area ( Ok, Spike did, and Roddy does his own thing for kids, but they never published on Lulu! ). This story, is a real life tale of three friends and to a degree their helpers, who take a bicycle ride from Oldham to Palestine. The main author, Ali Dabbagh, is the Partriarch of the family, and his friends it seems; and there are delightfully irreverent names for said leader, including His Majesty, which is part of the joy and delight to read throughout. It is also worth noting that said leader, Ali Dabbagh, had, beginning about 4 years previously, suffered a series of heart problems, including 2 full blown heart attacks... More > which then developed into other problems, so we have to take off our hats off to him for having the courage to make this journey, and his wife who also had / has other medical problems. The descriptions of some of the preparations for this journey are hilarious, so much so, I don’t know whether it was a glorious exaggeration of some things which were done, or whether this was entirely fiction purely for our amusement; one such thing, an artistic vasectomy, is mentioned but readers are enquired not to ask further! I take it Ali and his family and friends love off the wall humour. Ok, the original style I mentioned earlier – Ali is the main author and his contributions are in their own font / style; all other contributions, mainly his wife and family, are also all in different styles for each person, allowing us to know who is saying / reporting what. You will also read of the terrible problems many Palestinians face, and of the worthy charities which do their utmost to help those affected – funds raised for this trip went to various of these charities, very worthwhile indeed. And there I will have to leave it – for now – but please do buy this book, and travel with this happy crew as they take a courageous journey on bicycles across Europe and over to the Middle East. Ali and family and friends? Very well done, most impressed. John Haines.< Less
