Unlike most of the men who fought in the Pacific during World War Two, Allan Callow brought to those blood-soaked islands a Harvard-disciplined literary sensibility along with his medical training. Consequently, this memoir, written in a peculiarly personal style through a lens of acute intelligence, compassionate observation, and the wisdom of years, is akin to time travel. It transports the reader back some seven decades to the most ferocious fighting our soldiers faced in those three years and ten months of America’s participation in the Second World War. It is not for the faint-hearted. This is a singular account that deserves a wide readership. For serious students of history seeking primary sources, this is the gold standard. For Americans in thrall of war, it is a must-read. Allan Callow is an unsung national treasure.
