Mezzanine and Other Curiously Dark Tales by Allan Watson Some months ago, curious about Scottish writer Allan Watson, I fired up his blog and stumbled into a veritable treasure trove of short stories, interviews, and music. Drawn to the title, the first link I clicked on was for the feature story of this collection, "Mezzanine". The opening sentence grabbed me... "Death isn't cold like the old tales say." and the rest of the paragraph pulled me under with it's raw power. Months later, I have read "Mezzanine" countless times, and I'm not sure I've come up for air yet. (Possibly I've become a 10th victim, seduced and taken apart at the seams by The King of Hearts, the antagonist of the story.) This is the dark and delicious tale of a serial killer, his last victims's death and ultimate revenge from beyond the grave. Other highlights in this strong and multi-dimensional collection include: The Mystery of the Seven Suicides - This tale features demon... More > banishment as well as a middle aged group of trainspotter's forming a flash-mob. Yes, REALLY. It just doesn't get much more wonderful. Cherries for Lady Jane - Takes the reader back in time to a sanatorium for the terminally ill and insane, where one lost soul, struggling with his own demons from the war, manages to aid another. Memphis Belle- A brilliant little murder mystery, involving a macabre exhibit of the dead , set against the background of the Tate Modern. I didn't figure it out. I Love You - As powerful as those three words imply. A murderous love poem of a story, that dares you to read it and not feel it in your bones.( and possibly other places.) The Perfect Wife - Are you a Michael Buble' fan? I'm so sorry; that's going to be spoiled for quite some time. No, I can't give it away. That wouldn't be fair. You HAVE to read it. It's been a few months since my first read, and I still give a snicker when I hear one of Mr. Buble's tunes. These are just a few of the highlights contained in this wickedly delightful collection of curiously dark tales. Buy it , read it, and then buy the rest of wordsmith Watson's books. I've a sneaking suspicion he's a genius.< Less
