The first thing that strikes you about Allen Woodman's History of Japanese Martial Arts is the cover. In concept, it is not a bad attempt; the elements, colours and typeface are all well chosen and composed. However, it is so badly pixilated that I can clearly see the individual pixels when holding the book at arm's length. Unfortunately, the cover is indicative of the entire book in terms of quality. Almost all of the interior illustrations are about as poorly reproduced as the cover, and those parts of the text that we can be reasonably certain that Woodman wrote himself are full of spelling errors, grammatical errors and generally poor language. No competent editor ever came within a bo staff's length of this product. The above-mentioned problems are bad enough, but the worst is yet to come. Because the major part of the book was not even written by Woodman in the first place. When it comes to the core of the book, the chapters about martial arts history, the "author"... More > just cut and pasted from Wikipedia and various other web pages, entirely without giving credit to the sources, or even indicating that someone else was the original writer. And he did not even bother to do the job well. Senteces are cut in half, entire sections have been pasted twice with identical contents, and Japanese terms and names are transcribed differently in different parts of the text. Since parts from various sources are compiled more or less randomly (including internal contradictions), there is little trace of any coherence. Perhaps Woodman is a great martial artist. If so, it makes the whole thing even sadder, because this poor excuse of a book is as far as you can come from the core ethics of martial arts, and it is a real embarrassment for its author as well as the publisher, Sidekick Publications. It is not likely that I will ever again pick up a book by Allen Woodman, or one published by Sidekick.< Less
