After reading Calico, by Allison Bruning, I learned to never again believe it's safe to buy a book based on what the author writes about themselves! I thought this was going to be a good book since I love reading about Indian couture. My great grandfather was of Shawnee decent and I'm working on my family tree at this time. But when trying to read Calico, my frustration levels heightened as it was impossible to figure out what the point of this story is because it's all over the place. Very bad plot or no plot at all! Was it about two sisters? A French culture? An Indian tribe? Or what? Just very confusing and so I lost interest. I put it down and waited a few weeks before picking it up again thinking that would give me time to digest what I've read and maybe it would all make sense during my second attempt. Sadly, not any better. Calico gets worse the further into the book you go. I wish I could have said this book is a 5 star hit but I'm not going to lie to you, it's a bomb and not... I really, really tried to like this book. The premise is promising, but it's just written so badly that it was next to impossible to understand. Half the time I had to go back two pages to figure out who was talking - the characters aren't outlined or explained well and there are some really stereotypical archetypes. That, and I can only read about rape and molestation for so long.(Ideally, never) Once would have been enough - this story went way beyond what was necessary. The author seemed to be glorying in the abuse and I found that sickening. I referred to this story as the Car Wreck to my friends - it was terrible, but I had to see how it ended. And I wanted to read it all the way through so I could justify posting a bad review. My apologies, I just cannot recommend this, even as a free download. By, Gryphonesse

I read the first edition and after borrowing this edition and finishing it recently, I must decline my approval. Just not any better and worse then the last one. Too confusing...too little attention was given and details were absent. Badly written book, not recommended.
