This is an amazing book that I happened to pick up one day when searching for titles that were similar to Catcher in the Rye, a favorite book of mine from days past. Wow...I wasn't expecting it, but The Great Depression goes in a completely different direction than J.D. Salinger's masterpiece, but still captures the same kind of displacement and loneliness in the main character's attempt at finding a place in the world. Indeed, the central character of the book is not even given a name for us to consider. He is completely anonymous, and feels as much, working temp. jobs and oggling pretty co-workers at his current temp. job. When he attempts to date one of them, it turns out horribly wrong. Later, the main character decides to do some online dating sites and actually has some luck with them, but when he finally does get more than a few feet with a girl he meets online, she quickly disappears after he reveals a certain embarrassing fact about himself that has completely shaped his... More > ability to interract with members of the opposite sex. His story continues down the spiral but at the end, does offer a slight glimmer of hope, even if it's at the end of a false creature comfort found nestled in Dorothy's Oz psychology that there's truly "no place like home." I found this book to be truly engrossing. At first, I was laughing at the main character's follies, but by the end, my heart sank right alongside his with all the problems he encountered. Who hasn't felt awkward when wanting to connect with hot people? Who hasn't had problems paying the rent on time? It's these type of universal ideas that the author Alon Bersharder taps into which truly begins to reel you into a path of empathy for the main character. I couldn't stop reading it. I wanted a huge story arc, a gigantic love note at the end of the book, but what I got was disappointment wrapped up in a potential for things to get better, but will it? And I mean all of this in the best way possible. This book is the little cousin of Catcher in the Rye, and a tiny glimpse into our modern day society and how all of us have the chance to be simply lost amongst our peers and truly lost within our own lives. Buy this book today. It's simply untouchable. A perfect 5 stars and this author should be picked up immediately by somebody now.< Less

This is a brutally honest character study. I plowed through the entire book in one sitting and cried at the end. Painfully funny at times too. Highly recommended.
