Nov 17, 2013Alvaro Garcia blends narrative history with present-day realities in this insightful review of America's heritage, today's challenges, and solutions for the future. I could not put this book down, as it was one of the most engaging and reliable sources of historical information I've ever encountered, told in a way that resonates with present-day issues. Mr. Garcia has masterfully interwoven the characters, the ideals, the visions, the adversities, and the triumphs of early America in a succinct yet graceful style that is easy to read and digest. I intend to read this book again, as Mr. Garcia's narrative made the leaders of America's past seem so real and relatable. Although I have taken several history classes in the past, I learned a number of things about America I never knew before; this birds-eye view gave me a heightened awareness of the prevailing themes of our country. The historical context logically leads into a solution-minded discussion of the myriad of social, political,... More > and economic concerns which American citizens are confronted with. A pattern of involved citizenship is the way in which true change is brought about for reform and progress. Mr. Garcia saliently links the democratic underpinnings of our nation with the civic responsibility of the individual who is in a real position to make a difference. Mr. Garcia sensitively takes on major issues such as immigration, education, health care reform, and the economy to present a commentary on America's direction and a call to bipartisan cooperation. Particularly engaging was Mr. Garcia's case for energy independence and the far-reaching consequences our energy habits have upon our position in foreign policy and the global economy. This book is not only for newly naturalized citizens, but for all Americans who want an intelligent appraisal of where we stand as a nation with a view towards constructive participation, exercising our rights so that America continues to fulfill its history as a global beacon of democracy.< Less
