Review by Ken Poier If you read books to be transported off to a magical world, this book is for you! The author, Alyn Lewis, certainly describes the world in excruciating detail. No mud puddle or puff of smoke goes by unnoticed by the author. The land of Urtal-ir, by word count, could be considered the main character of this book and it is quite a world at that. Magic is as common as technology and whole buildings run on it. Giant towers of magic spike out from the unsanitary streets. Forrest crawl with life. Expansive Dwarven strongholds operate with clockwork precision. Santino, Appleton, and Herb (the main party of the quest) have a relationship arch more akin to a buddy cop film than an epic adventure. I think part of this is that none of them take any real agency in their quest and are sort of constantly being pushed along by other characters or the lure of gold. My only real complaint with this book however is the title, Return of the Tolec. If not for the title, I doubt I... More > would have viewed the Tolec as important to the story at all other than another monster to overcome. Throughout the book, even after they are fought, they are regarded as a myth, if mentioned at all. Until the characters reach the Dwarven city, most of the time is spent either at a bar or library. So, I was constantly waiting for something to happen with the Tolec, but then nothing. Even after the battle, very little is learned about them, why they are here, where they went, ect. I would recommend the author keep “Return of the Tolec” as the name of the series as that seems to be the greater plot, but instead call this book “A Wizard’s Guide to Taverns and Caverns” which is exactly what it is and that’s not a bad thing.< Less

I just read Return of the Tolec, written by Alyn W. Lewis. The story was completely engrossing with an amazing fantasy world that Alyn takes you through in a blur of magic and intrigue. A wonderful, original story that I would highly recommend.
