Jun 12, 2014Review – Book: Viasmae, by A.M. Brosius This is what I look for in a book of Historical Fiction, even Alternate History: a) For it to introduce me to a time and place that I would like to live in – where I could imagine interacting with the characters introduced and in the societies drawn upon. b) To feel driven to finish the book, so I know all its twists and turns. When I start carrying it around with me and reading it at every opportunity (on buses, waiting for a ‘Walk’ light, etc.) this means I like it. The world is real to me, and the plot is exciting. c) When I feel I can incorporate the lessons learned into my life, whether or not it is Historical fiction or Fantasy, I feel my time is well spent. d) Bonus: When I am motivated to want to learn more about the actual era and cultures represented by doing additional study - that is a very good thing. This book, VIASMAE by A.M. Brosius, checked all four boxes. It did take me about 30 pages to pick up the rhythm and cosmology of the... More > story. Brosius writes in a style I was not used to, and the world (Greece in the 1200s) is not a time/culture I have ever studied. But once I connected with the world, the characters ‘popped’ out and I wanted to go meet them, train with them and be worthy of their friendship. The quick and dirty? Yes, I felt it was worth my time to read, gave me much to consider, and I am eager to read the rest of the series. Disclosure: I do know the author. That got me to start the book, but it was the story and the characters that made me want to finish it. Cautions: There are detailed descriptions of violence, sex and battle. Some characters introduced are from the first book in the series. Others may appear in other books of the series. Even with it leaving a few questions about some of the minor characters, the ride is still rewarding. I felt the book told me about a world I would like to live in for a while. Medieval Athens and the Greek Civilization of the time was not a world I know much about. I am now interested in learning much more about that time, and the people and their accomplishments and challenges. I do not know if every detail of culture is accurate to the time, but his world seems self-consistent even if portions are Alt Hist. In the next edition, I would like him to include at least a ‘recommended reading list’ for further study, as well as his process, research, interests and background. Also, some more information as to his bio would be of interest.< Less
