"The Pieces of the Puzzle by Amanda Olivier" Amanda Olivier’s book, the Pieces of the Puzzle, is a penetrative enquiry into the many facets of human life, which examines the levels of mind, body and spirit, suggesting ways in which we might come to experience a sense of inner peace as a result of getting to know the Self. Poems conclude each chapter but I found that the language of the prose is poetic in itself. I felt that the book could be read incrementally, and not necessarily in a linear fashion. These are chapters to be read and absorbed and above all felt, rather like the poems that accompany them. These thoughts are not prescriptive; one does not get the feeling that the author is laying down a game plan of how to go about achieving inner peace. Indeed, there is a sense that Amanda is functioning almost as an editor or channel for a much more numinous-sounding voice. The words Amanda channels do not challenge us to change our thinking. Like great poetry, they do not... More > state. Rather they suggest ways of approaching the inner life for our consideration. There is no forceful argument here, rather a gentle entreaty to consider dimensions of our selves that we had perhaps not considered before. Some of the subject headings include: Attraction, Energy, Self, Fear, Alcohol and Drugs, Your World. The book is not ashamed of magnifying the beautiful and the light, but neither is it afraid to consider the darker aspects of life. As the author reminds us: “There is both light and dark in this world and they are both an essential part of our being”. With each chapter one gets the feeling that one is slowly coming to know the deeper self of which the author speaks a little better, so that one is gradually assembling a puzzle, creating something whole from what appears at first as fragmentary. It is not an easy book. Self-examination is a path for the brave, and I found myself reflecting, sometimes uncomfortably, on the insights contained here with reference to my own life experiences. But throughout the book one always feels Amanda’s compassionate tone, compounded by the heartfelt poems, reassuring us that “all things are just experiences and are sent to make us take a good look at our Self and know that Self better”. One gets the feeling that the author has been the first to explore these avenues with courage and an open mind. The Pieces of the Puzzle is an exercise in the sharing of wisdom, gleaned from both experience and lucid self-observation. Reading it is like embarking on a journey – the author is our guide, quietly pointing us towards our own inner awakening. It is a valid and valuable book. Simon Maxwell< Less
