WHEN YOU COME TOGETHER brings us back to primitive theological truths such as the church as family, the body with its interconnected parts and the presence of the Holy Spirit, Who delights to reveal God's heart and mind to His gathered people. Amy Anderson contends that belonging to God's people should involve us all in something less like a music concert and more like a jazz session--with every person participating as an essential instrument, following a common thread while also expecting the Holy Spirit to weave new themes into the established patterns. Anderson provides a nitty-gritty guide to both why and how we can ditch the concert paradigm and instead learn to gather alertly in God's presence, allowing Him to speak in our midst and turn our lives upside-down.

Just finished this book and find it highly challanging. I agree with most of what Dr. Anderson says about church as a body of Christ and family. Being from small fellowship taught me a lot of the same principles she talks about. It also resonantes with the misgivings about current "western-type" worship style lot of people have. The fact that member of the church is just passive spectator of the performance makes the whole body suffer, because only the few are participating and the rest isn't taught practically anything. On the other hand, as mentioned previously, Dr. Anderson is challenging. She goes beyond anything I would think possible to want in pentacostal church. Being second generation pentacostal (and fifth or sixth in the movement) I haven't seen much of the strong work of Holy Spirit among his people and was left desiring more. I do believe there is more. But it demands something from Christians. I hope for lot of wise and challenging pastors that will lead their... More > congregations closer to God. I believe this book is unique to start the discussion going.< Less

It may not be fair to write a review halfway through the book, but I have already sent messages to all my friends who are longing for something more in their fellowship experiences - please read this! I love the analogy of church as a "Jazz Session," vs. a "Concert." The Holy Spirit obviously intended every part of the body to have a vital contribution, and the Christian cannot be fulfilled without this contribution. Whenever I am in a position to lead I ask myself "how can this be from all of us, not just me?" So many more New Testament concepts are covered in this book. I hope it will not only be well read, but also applied.
