"Review by Mike Tv" At a time when flash fiction has been reduced to uninspired taglines, just simple records of ideas so the authors can book ass to the internet & plant their little flags in anticipation of suing somebody with followthrough who comes up with the same idea, these 10-word pages in That's Not My Hair Do! inspire questions, lols, & a couple of awwws in gestures as simple as tossing somebody their keys. In one reading, That's Not My Hairdo! questions the relationship of fashion, identity, & culture. To denounce your own fashion is braver than admitting that it was you who slipped out the sewage fart in the break room. Another reading is just there to show us a good time. Another reading questions the depth & reliability of the message delivered by a given medium. Considering the hairdo as the model of "medium", how can we trust the message? These kids with the Margaret Keane -esque eyes tell us flat-out that their appearance is not... More > their choice. The way they appear represents the wishes of some unseen parental figures whose anonymity could describe the influence of class, race, personal taste, and era. The title statement of denial could be viewed in a few ways: it could be that the people pictured on each page are denying responsibility for their current situation. Or, it could be that the statement is actually coming from the artist/writer or the viewer/reader, possibly imposing prejudice for better or worse, or maybe just anticipating it. Is it political? Are we laying out analogies for corporate media & information outlets, or the imposition of one nation's will upon another? Is it comedy? Are we just having some laughs at some fucked-up hair dos? Is it aesthetic? Is it just a chance to look at some great drawings while the burden of judging them is lifted by the cute/feeble/comical shock of text demanding justice below? Ultimately it brings to trial one of the world court's oldest defendants: free will. The author & artist have staked claims on their own by producing these materials that, even if someone else had come up with the same idea, they probably couldn't figure out a way to process it. -Mike Tv< Less
