"Get Real! Fighting the Mythic Woman, Finding Your Authentic Self" has opened up a whole new view for me, not only about how my life has been influenced by things I wasn't even aware of but also it created a new view for me to live from. As a mom, wife and full time employee I have filled my life with the Do's and Dont's that haven't always made me happy but I thought were the correct choices because of my culture or circumstances. I am the strong woman for everyone and constantly giving all I have until I am so tired, overwhelmed and frustrated. "Get Real! Fighting the Mythic Woman, Finding Your Authentic Self" pinpoints all the places in my life that have been taken over by the Mythic Woman, I am able to see how I have allowed other things in life to make my choices for me and realize this is not how I want my own daughters to live their lives. The book explains that as women we all feel the pull of the Mythic woman everywhere and to fight her we need to discover... More > what we really want for our own lives and to create a deeper connection with all women in our communities, to reach out, support and empower each of them, even if its with a smile. Taking the small steps to discover my Authentic Self has brought back my creativity, a passion for life again and an inner calmness that I haven't felt in years. I highly recommend every woman read this book and then let your daughters read it.< Less

GET REAL! Fighting the Mythic Woman, Finding Your Authentic Self is a vital book that women of all ages and backgrounds need to read. Regardless whether she is married or single, a homemaker or career woman, or a mother of a son or daughter, or not at all, this book will benefit everyone who reads it with an open mind. Ananya Rajan's eye-opening thesis that women try too hard to become the Mythic Woman should cause girls and young women to reevaluate their goals so as to ensure her life decisions are her own, rather than what she thinks society dictates. All the while feminism was succeeding in women’s political advancement—from women’s suffrage to moving toward equality in the workplace and sovereignty over ones own body–women were still settling into lives similar to their mothers and grandmothers, and mothers continued (perhaps subconsciously) to raise their daughters to do the same, thus perpetuating societal norms that have been handed down for generations. When women aspire to... More > be the Mythic Woman, they are neglecting their Authentic Self, never becoming who they truly are or never really knowing who they truly are. Girls and women tend to be more concerned about what others think of them rather than what they think of themselves. In this book Rajan seeks to figure out where these myths came from and how can they be changed. So many women in my life worked hard to be the Mythic Woman and now wonder why they are so unhappy, suffering from multiple health problems and depression. One woman I know graduated at the top of her Stanford Law School class and was named one of the most important attorneys in the state, yet because she didn’t follow her mother’s lead and become a housewife and mother she felt like a failure. She eventually gave up practicing law and takes an ever-increasing number of anti-depressants—to no avail. Now at 60 years old she weakly does as she is told by her demanding and verbally abusive husband without question and is merely an empty shell of her former self. Another friend knew from the time we met during freshman year of high school that the one thing she definitely did not want was to end up like her mother. She put up a gallant fight for a while, but eventually those traditions handed down to her from her mother, aunts, grandmother and society took hold and her life is identical to that of her mothers. Now at 45 she is unhappy and suffers from numerous health ailments. GET REAL! is a cri de coeur to women to “listen to your inner voice, find[ing] your Authentic Self and become[ing] the person you truly want to be.” In that I think the book succeeds and one can only hope women of all ages, but especially young women, will read this book and heed its lessons and lead rich and fulfilling lives because of it.< Less
