Hypnotherapy, or human hypnosis, is a trance-like condition involving apparent alteration in consciousness and memory, during which the hypnotized subject becomes susceptible to the hypnotist's suggestions. These may produce anaesthesia (absence of sensation), analgesia (insensitivity to pain), paralysis, or apparent regression to childhood functioning. Post-hypnotic suggestions made during hypnosis influence the subject after the trance has ended and may induce the subject to forget what has occurred during hypnosis (post-hypnotic amnesia). Hypnotherapeutic, or hypnotic, suggestibility differs from person to person. A tendency to vivid daydreams and willingness to be hypnotized characterize those who are susceptible. Hypnosis can be used in dentistry, obstetrics, and psychotherapy. In all cases, the patient's belief in its efficacy seems crucial. It was the study of hypnosis, which led Freud to explore the unconscious mind and develop his theory of psychoanalysis.
