"A Diary of Hope: The True Story of an American Prisoner of War" This book is about Frank Carollo, who was a Prisoner of War during World War II. Frank and the other soldiers on his bomber were shot down over Nazi Austria and were forced to march to POW camp Stalag XVII B. They had no clue the grueling life they were about to experience. I enjoyed the book for many reasons. To begin with, the plot kept me hooked. The whole time I was reading I was wondering how anyone could survive the conditions Frank and the other soldiers had to endure, and wondered how his family could keep going through the hard times of not knowing whether he was dead or alive. Another aspect that kept me wanting to read more was the hand drawn pictures, poems, and photos by Frank and some of the other POW’s in Stalag XVII B. The pictures were appropriate in explaining parts of the novel that could not be imagined or just to enhance the reading experience. The poems showed how the soldiers really felt... More > during their time at war, and the photos of Frank and his family are an added bonus to help you get to know the main character. Also, the book includes an interview with Frank’s sister Rose which shows part of the family’s side to this terrible time before, during, and after the war. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in war especially World War II, or just wants to learn more about the experiences soldiers and their families go through during war time.< Less
