May 18, 2016Three weeks ago, I finished my reading of the paperback edition of Hints & Tips For Videogame Pioneers by Andrew Hewson, and I have to say that I enjoyed every single page, it is wonderfully written (zero typos also), the chapters are very well structured. It is uplifting, entertaining, funny, bittersweet at times, but overall an addictive reading. A really heartfelt and honest writing from a true pioneer in the European videogame industry. Andrew Hewson tells us the story of his involvement in the beginnings of the videogame industry in the UK since 1980, when he founded Hewson Consultants, one of the most succesful and loved British software houses, until the triumph of its successor 21st Century Entertainment in the early 90s. From publishing books about early computers like the ZX80 and ZX81, to release innovative games on 8 bit platforms like the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC and later on the best pinball games of its era on 16 bit machines like Atari ST,... More > Commodore Amiga. The book is full of anecdotes and stories behind the most important games that Hewson Consultants released during its lifespan including Nightflite, The Seiddab Trilogy, Avalon, Dragontorc, Gribbly's Day Out, Paradroid, Uridium, Nebulus, Exolon and Cybernoid. Also, the list of software personalities gathered commenting and analysing on the book is simply amazing and their memories are always interesting: Steve Turner (Avalon, Ranarama), Mike Male (Nightflite, Southern Belle), Dominic Robinson (Zynaps), Raffaele Cecco/Nick Jones (Exolon, Cybernoid, Stormlord), John Phillips (Impossaball, Nebulus, Eliminator), Jeroen Tel, Jon Hare, Ben Daglish, Jonathan Dunn, Gari Biasillo (Slayer, Steel, Future Basketball) and members of Digital Illusions (DICE), developers of Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies and Pinball Illusions. If you are a retrogamer, a journalist or videogame historian, a programmer/graphic artist/musician working in the industry today who wants to know how were the beginnings of the videogames industry 35 years ago, or you simply loved Hewson games back in the day, this book is unmissable. Highly recommended!!!< Less
