In 1987 Andrew Holloway went to work as a editor of North Korean propaganda. Principally translating such absurd works as 'Kim Il-sung, a divine man' from literal English into proper English, what started out as an adventure, quickly turned into a bit of a nightmare. Perhaps naively he had hoped to see a country with a philosophy of self reliance - the essence the Juche Idea - prospering against the odds. Instead what he found was a country floundering and a people suffering badly from a delusional philosophy and a leadership intent on hiding the truth about the outside world from their own people. It's a sometimes funny, sometimes depressing, but always maddeningly frustrating tale of living inside a country ruled by a twisted logic that even Kafka might baulk at.
