Set in the moors of Devon, England in the mid 1800's...

Upon such a scene, the only thing anyone should have to deal with is the elements...but there were other events...strange events. Four brothers, Stickles by name, ravaged the countryside. Attempts to arrest them by human means failed. A supernatural force takes form in the shape of a black Mastiff, known as The Hound, and its companion, The Raven. Each had its own reason for being rid of the Stickles..."

This is a really great book. The story is eerie and enchanting at the same time. I could not put down the book once i started. I could see this story turned into a film and directed by Tim Burton. Really really good read.
A good read set in a time and place well suited to the mystery and terror of the story. Interesting twists and turns and a collection of quite realistic characters. Balorbane is written in the classic style - descriptive prose, realistic conversation & actions and just enough darkness to make you leave a light on...
