The intro for the book is a great story on its own, Andrew explains how the project started, setting up a web site and encouraging other writers to submit their work, deciding to publish, getting an excellent illustrator on board as well as graduates from his old university to help with editing, marketing and promotion. All those involved agreed that profits from sales would go to The Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association. Now the stories, I have read more from these writers than I have of H.P. Lovecraft, I like the genre as it is horror which is perceived rather than the "in your face" horror we experience in today's stories, films and videos. It was good to use my imagination while getting absorbed into the works. Another bonus for me is that being set in Cumbria the stories bring out real place names, Ashness, Blencathra and Ings to name a few. I will never pass these places again without recalling the associated tale. Just remember after reading them, next... Each story explains the nature of Lovecraft’s universe when required, which is handy to those like myself who may not have read his work before. As someone who bought this because of the stated charity donation, I have now also bought an anthology of Lovecraft’s work and I am on my way to becoming a fan. The stories cover a wide range of locations, history and folklore in the Cumbrian region, but there are still a lot more unused local legends for the basis of further stories. I particularly liked the retelling of the Croglin vampire tale and the Moresby Swan. My Dad first told me about the Croglin vampire so I was quite excited to see a different take on an old (but not well known enough)story. The artwork which goes with the stories is done very well and rounds off the whole feel to the book very well. Well done to all the writers and nice to see a certain well known fell walker get a nod! I look forward to checking out books three and four whenever they appear and hope more local... More > writers will be able to contribute in future?< Less

I like Cthulhu fiction and can find little to fault with this when all the profits go to a charity. The stories as they stand are actually pretty good, a mixed bag in terms of subject and style and the concept of Cthulhu set in Cumbria is not as outlandish as some previous Lovecraft tribute books. I would be happy with the purchase of any non-charity anthology that had the same ratio of hits. I love the Lake District myself, and the mountains and lakes make an atmospheric setting. The in-story illustrations raise the quality of this collection higher still! Keep up the good work Cumbrian Cthulhu.
