Compared to pain, disease, or death, even the most exorbitantly priced product will appear to be a good deal. Governments and the public are aware of the pricing power this confers to firms in this market. They know a booming population and an increasing role of private firms only strengthen this effect. Yet, in Mexico, prices have shown strong increases during the past years. This essay sets out to discover the extent of medicine price increases in 2001-2005 in three Mexican cities and compares them with inflation. With information from key agents in pharmaceutical companies, the government, and regulatory agency, this essay also attempts to explain why these price increases happen.
