Aug 14, 2017These incredible lessons in Genius Matters have been the best character development lessons I have ever used in my classroom. I have been teaching for 18+ years, and my students have been participating in Genius Hour for five years, the last three of which have started by using Angela Maiers' amazing lessons! It's astounding what can happen when we create a time and space for students to strive audaciously and collaborate with others! Students gain self-confidence in their skills, talents and gifts which allows their learning, lives and world to be changed for the better. Genius Matters because our students matter!
Aug 9, 2017I could not have kicked off our first year of Genius Hour on our campus without this tool! What an amazing first year we had! With Angela's expertise I was able to tap into my students' Genius with ease. Her recommendations for activities are on point and have a way of helping students dig deep to find their true Genius. I highly recommend this book for anyone who may be new to Genius Hour or anyone who may have started Genius Hour without this book and are finding it's not easy without that firm foundation. I truly believe the success of our program has everything to do with the work we put in at the beginning of the process- that Angela stresses is so important. Buy it. Read it. It's worth it. Your students are worth it!
Aug 8, 2017I've been in education over 12 years most of that time being in the elementary level. In the 2016-17 academic year I led a group of educators in grades 1-5 at my school and throughout the school district in a book study with Genius Matters. This was transformational for myself as an instructional leader as well as the educators who wanted to launch Genius Hour and had no experience and also a few who had dabbled in GH in their classrooms. All of the educators in the book studies have effectively launched Genius Hours in their classrooms and are utilizing Angela's strong work as a key aspect for their framework. Additionally, now that I've moved on to an administrative role in a middle school I plan to integrate these components within our Genius Hour time set aside weekly as a school as well as Genius Day enrichments 2-3 times a year to enhance an already strong foundation. If you want to learn about Genius Hour in any capacity (no matter your level of expertise) this is the book for... More > you!! Two thumbs up!< Less
Aug 8, 2017I've been a teacher for over 10 years now and always put massive value on if a child is happy they will learn better. I try my hardest to really praise and value everything they have done, however hard it is. I read this book on the back of a promotion from SMART Technologies not quite sure what to expect. I loved it! The book opens by asking how many adults think they are a Genius? not many. Children? They all do, so what happens? Angela Maiers gives some great practical advice, in simple chunks, how to help teachers plan for time to support the inner Genius in their students, something so often lost in the modern curriculum. This is done through a Genius Hour. Give your students time and support to find problems and work through to solutions. If you read one book this year that will have an impact on your classroom, read this one!
Aug 7, 2017Genius Matters should be required reading for any educator planning to introduce Genius Hour, 20% time, etc. into a classroom. It provides well written lessons for helping students begin to explore who they are and what their passions are. This should be the foundation of any passion-based learning program.
