In her memoir, “Against All Odds”, Angelle Kwemo details her captivating life story and struggles in a way that sucks the readers in and leaves them feeling inspired. As an immigrant woman who has had to traverse the fine line between vastly different cultures, Angelle has fought to form an identity that is grounded in self-confidence and a drive for success. The lessons she has learned through her trials and tribulations are sprinkled throughout this easy to read novel in an engaging manner that forms a bond between the author and the reader. The main aspect of the novel that drew me in was Kwemo’s lack of sugar-coating. She does not hold back when delivering the bitter truth about being an African woman trying to succeed in a white male dominated world. Whether it was her experience being bullied in the sixth grade for her skin color or receiving degrading advice from male mentors claiming that she was too pretty to be taken seriously, Kwemo lays out the events in a straightforward... More > fashion that leaves the reader stunned. Each event showcases her strength and courage in the face of adversity. There is a host of unique and realistic pieces of advice that Kwemo supplements with her life story. Some advice can be seen as too harsh, like the reality of racism in the business world and how to circumvent it, as well as reminding the reader that “your name is your brand”. However, this harsh advice lends an authenticity to Angelle’s voice that is often missing from other countless self-help books on the market. The layout of the novel is exceptionally engaging and beautiful. Each chapter begins with a famous African proverb that can be humorous, thoughtful, and tragic. The end page of a chapter is designated to quotes from famous leaders in history which are presented in beautiful script. In this quick novel, each page has meaning behind it and the quotes are perfectly chosen. My book is heavily highlighted and I have gone through innumerable post-its trying to mark each fascinating remark. If all of this does not convince you to read this book, then please do it for Angelle’s humor. She shines with her wit and sarcasm, especially when criticizing some negative aspects of western and African culture. I found myself laughing out loud in many parts. Quick read, helpful life advice, and an inspirational story for people from all walks of life. This book is a must read!< Less
