"The Front Page Story- A critique of youth culture" This review is based on the downloadable pdf file. The Front Page Story is a sharp and stylised photobook that effectively develops a relation between how contemporary media portrays youth and how they see themselves. The contrast of strong black and white photos to punchy colour ones makes a powerful statement that youth culture is not always as it is represented. This is emphasised by the use of text throughout the book. The themed of the book is presented through two points of view. The first, the media, is represented by the newspaper headlines. The second view is that of the three subjects, Hester, James, and Stephen, who are represented by the photographs they took, giving us a brief insight into their individual youth cultures. Each subject is awarded a chapter in the book establishing grouped images. The newspaper articles between each chapter serve as a linking movement from one subject to the next creating an... While the viewing of each chapter is not necessarily order dependent each chapter’s narrative images should be viewed in sequential order. Each chapter begins with the Anita’s black and white portrait of each subject. Her decision to display these images in black and white links the reader’s view (or outside view) with contemporary media as they echo the loud and bold text of the newspaper articles. By choosing to keep the images taken by the subjects themselves in colour, Anita keeps the emotion upbeat and happy. By placing these images three to a page in a filmstrip formation their snapshot nature is emphasised. Overall, it is a visually exciting book that keeps the reader curious in each page.< Less
