This is an excellent book and well worth the price even for people who are more interested in the Elder Futhark than the Younger Futhark which is the focus of Ms. Sheffield's book. She brings a wealth of mythological knowledge and penetrating insights to her material, which includes an entire chapter on the 'P' rune of the Elder Futhark.

This is a great book that need to be on every Asatru/heathen's bookshelf. Written by a well-known and respected author in heathenism who is known for her well-researched, academic approach. This is NOT just some "behind-the-keyboard" heathen who never ventures out into the community itself! This book is great not only for those interested in runes (whether for magical reasons or more mundane historical reasons), but for those interested in exploring Old Norse/Germanic culture as a whole. Seeped in the appropriate world-view, Ann Groa Sheffield goes beyond simple interpretations of the rune poems and seeks out the very cosmic concepts behind them within their own cultural context. This book has been greatly needed in runic and general Norse/Germanic studies. At the same time, Ann Groa Sheffield makes these heavy topics accessible to the newcomer as well as providing much to chew upon for the old-timer. --Mike "Vinterulf" Smith, Úlfar aff Jera...
