I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading "Orchid Girl" and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys female "coming of age" literature. It reminds me a little of Plath's "Bell Jar". Anna Christy's writing is excellent, atmospheric and sometimes poetic. The Oxford University scenes are at times hilarious and with hints of Brideshead. While struggling out of her depression, she touches on some philiosophical issues on how to live life and how much beauty can mean. Young girls striving to become models will certainly recognize themselves in this story. But it is a deep story, and anyone interested in how this superficial society we live in affects young people will be interested. As will psychologists looking for the insight into a slightly narcissistic character who strives for healing.
