"Download version of "Corvus Dreams"" Anna Hoffman's Corvus Dreams struck me as a sort of freeform Charles de Lint story. Unlike de Lint, Dreams is nearly plotless, and floats through the lives, told nearly in vignette form, of around a dozen characters. Like de Lint, magic and dreams and quiet drama intertwine. A sense of the infinite presses down the mundane lives of the characters (or, rather, those characters who have mundane lives). Ms. Hoffman is a capable and often very poetic writer, and I liked spending time with the people I met in the pages, and I quite enjoyed the story's ideas and cosmology. I'm glad I took a chance on this one. I do have a few complaints. The print size -- for the download, anyway -- is eye-crampingly small. Also, instead of italics, words are bookended with the HTML tags < i > and < /i >. Very distracting. While I did like the rhythm and flow of Ms. Hoffman's prose, she does need to get a handle on punctuation and tense.... Still, these distractions were easy to tolerate in the context of the story as a whole. I’d like to see more of Ms. Hoffman’s work.< Less
