Anytime a person begins talking about their “perfections”, you know the story is bound to take some explosive twists. Lydia Wise is a woman who prides herself on presenting a “perfect” image. She seemed to be living what has been considered the “American Dream”. She had a husband, a son and a daughter, a successful business, and prestige and respect in her community. Through triumph and misfortune, Lydia holds her head up and refuses to engage any evidence that will shed the light of truth upon her character flaws. However, as the present tragedies of Lydia’s life begin to unearth the hidden secrets of her past, we start to see her “picture perfect” image fade into the backdrop. This shocking reveal of Lydia’s life, speaks to families everywhere. Where there are people, secrets abound. Sometimes genetics and marriage are not the only “ties that bind.” A prime example is detailed in this story. Lydia’s son, BJ, often makes light-hearted fun of his cousin, Richard who has Downs... More > Syndrome. When a situation gets out of hand, BJ ends up experiencing what it’s like to live with a disability. Lydia’s daughter, Kia, is forced to determine how she will handle family secrets. Will she follow her mother’s footsteps? Will she step out on faith and publicly confront the darkest moments of her life? Throughout the novel, family secrets continue to unfold. This story explores the “what-if” of transparency. What if people find out what I did? What if they are not willing to forgive me? What if my family walks out on me? What if my clients take their business elsewhere? What if the church folk talk about me? What if…? The author, Annetta Swift, is known for intertwining God’s messages through the roller coaster rides of her characters. From the beginning of the ride, the reader experiences twists and turns, highs and lows, only to arrive at a destination of God’s love and redeeming power. This novel lived up to that expectation. Through the eyes of Lydia Wise, we are eventually shown the true perspective of a “picture perfect” image.< Less
