An absolute masterpiece. Actually, two masterpieces. Let's start with Tokyo. It's rare when the third installment in a trilogy is the best but this is a rare exception. A strong comeback after the disaster that was Miami, Tokyo lives up to (and dare I say surpasses) the postmetamodern (a term coined by our own Kolsti Nguyen (whom I'll get to later)) glory of the original Tundra. As for Kolsti, this is quite possibly the greatest novella I've ever read. Surely there are better novels, but novellas? Never. Kolsti is both an intensely literary work -- rich with symbolism, intertextuality, and weighty philosophical and political themes -- and a delightfully fun genre fic romp, amalgamating pulpy detective noir and modern hip hop street-isms in an appropriation that is so respectful as not to be blasphemously appropriating (or, rather, biting) yet not so respectful as to be staid. Not only does it pay homage to the greatest young literary mind of the century (18 year-old Kolsti Nguyen... More > (whose work can be, in part, found at postmetakolsti.tumblr.com but eventually in university libraries across the globe)), this mini-mammoth even includes original prose from the eponymous genius himself in the very first chapter. If one needs, say, four minutes to read four pages (perhaps one is an especially reflective reader, I make no judgment) and one only has four minutes left to live, I most urgently urge one to read Kolsti Duc Nguyen's opening paragraph to this novella. The greatest literary achievement in the history of the novella is here. And it's actually a load of fun. Tired of academic literary fiction that demands so much of the reader and gives so little with regard to pleasure? Prepare for the literary time of your life. Kolsti Nguyen, teenage literary prodigy, is now a bona fide action star. Follow along as he defeats murderous thieves and reptilian monsters with the power of freestyle rap. Might this be the the fatal Infinite Jest of which Wallace spoke?< Less
