The book is a critique of politics and economic policy in the UK since the Second World War. It identifies a number of reasons why successive governments have failed to do the right thing at the right time, and suggests some remedies. Of paramount importance is the need for both governmental and electoral reform, in order to strengthen democracy and take the UK through the 21st century as a modern, socially just and economically strong country.

At last a bold, intelligent and well researched book on English politics from 1945 to the present day that is not only up to date (Feb 2010) but equally easily digestible by political science novices and veterans alike. In nine chapters - (1) The Post-War Years; (2) Our Parliamentary Democracy; (3) Governmental and Electoral Reform; (4) Inflation and Growth; (5) The Issue of National Debt; (6) Britain's Balance of Payments; (7) The Remedy; (8) The Stances of the Parties Today; and (9) What Now Britanna? - and only 174 pages in total, Dr Owen discusses the decisions and (in)actions of successive governments and their effects on the position in which the UK finds itself today. Voter apathy, marginalisation from Europe, law making stagnancy, the "credit crunch", ministerial responsibility, dependence on the USA, the standard of living, inflation, "buying British", the Euro, the Iraq war, minister's expenses and protecting UK trade and products are only some of the... More > book's poignant topics. The author, being a scientist himself who has lived abroad for many years in what is Europe's largest and arguably most successful economy, succeeds in evaluating the country's present and past status quo in a daring yet eye-opening manner, which should leave no reader-voter in doubt as to there being "nothing we can do". Workeable remedies for reform are put forward. The book concludes with advice on the various political parties' stances for this year's forthcoming general election. Compulsory reading for both voters and politicians and anyone else who has ever been frustrated with politics in this country.< Less
