A day to day account of being alone, away from someone you love.
Ariel grew up in a military family and then became a military spouse. While this diary reflects what happens on the home front, anyone can relate to this body of work.
The writing of this young author is incredibly powerful. Its honesty and beauty will move you to both tears and laughter that reach to your very core. Reviews from her web postings find this young woman’s writing undeniably refreshing and promising; its breadth and acuteness heart felt, though sometimes painful in honesty. At tumblr she is loved and adored, encouraged to not stop her postings.
This is Ariel’s first publication. Truly a remarkable, gifted young author the world needs to know.

Posted on September 9, 2011 by meganegerton Diary of An Empty Bed By: Ariel Aiken Easily one of the best books I have read for truly making me feel as though this person understands the way people feel when we are going through a deployment. It might sound strange to say that a coupl of the purposely left blank pages in the middle really spoke to me. As much as I encourage people to write, keep a diary or journal and express their feelings there are days when even doing that is just too much. It is an easy read too which is another plus as you don’t feel overwhelmed (when you usually already are).
From having been deployed many times this book is an eye opening experience for the one who deploys and the one who waits for you to return. It realistically brings the feelings and emotions of serving to the surface, when many of us don't until we are in divorce court. The book carefully walks you through one persons feelings and emotions, when they really are the emotions we all experience (the one who does deploy and the one who stays). This book opened my eyes as to why my spouse and I still have issues and realistically live separate life's, even now. I recommend this book to anyone who is and/or was in the military or has to spend lots of time away from the one they love. You will not come away unaffected and you will realize the impact separation has on you and the one who loves you. You may or may not like that realization.......
Amazing book, while it's a 'quick' read, ya have to take the time to let each page 'soak in'..because it's worth it! Love the humor too...Facebook farm. This very touching view of our inner most feelings was a real inspiration to me. Well done Ariel!
This is a fantastic book for anyone who has suffered from the loss of any loved one. This is Aiken's first book, and she truly has a remarkable gift of expression. Having been raised in a military family, only to marry a man just starting in the Air Force! Ariel expresses what every person feels but cannot say, or even put into words. Empty Bed is a quick read, and it really is a beautiful gift for any military spouse or widow. What a beautiful expression!
