The hallowed halls of academia and the elitist circles of conceptual art are blown apart when Professor Ted Shearing blasts his way out of his dreary academic position at Napa State College into the national art scene. He becomes a front and center performing artist when he begins incinerating the very pieces he so avidly collected. Ultimately he is undone by one of his humiliated and ridiculed artists. Or is he? Shimamura's hilarious wit and vivid portrayal of the art world intertwines bomb construction, elite university circles, murderous plots, erotic fantasies, and artistic anarchy. The reader has a front row seat where we wait in anxious anticipation for the show to start.

This comical tale centered in the world of art criticism will stay with you long after you finish reading it. The mounting absurdity of the situation the protagonist finds himself in serves as a commentary on both academia and contemporary art. Shimamura reveals himself as a deft satirist in the tradition of David Lodge and Richard Russo.

The question of "What is art?" has a long & storied past, with libraries full of volumes addressing the issue from many angles & perspectives. Unfortunately, the fields of aesthetics & art criticism are abstract, even obtuse, & seldom make for easy reading. This novel takes a refreshing tack & explores some of the themes associated with this thorny question through a light & gently humorous novel about a depressed college professor who becomes a controversial performance artist. If you enjoy casual, slightly irreverent philosophical musings along the lines of "Postmortem for a Postmodernist", "The Painted Word", "Sophie's World: A Novel about the History of Philosophy", or even "Looking At Philosophy: The Unbearable Heaviness of Philosophy Made Lighter", or the "Philosophy For Beginners" series, you should get a kick out of this short novel.
