Dec 22, 2015What a delightful read. I laughed my way through from start to finish - and back again. If you need some get-up-and-go inspiration from a person of many talents, then Throoovest is your man! Follow his lead and you'll soon be having some of the zaniest experiences of your life - and loving every moment of it! But be aware that this book comes with a health warning - once picked up, you'll not want to put it down! Thanks, Alan, for sharing life's ups and ups with us.
Apr 7, 2014By Swag Minal. I'll start by saying that this is the only book I've ever read in one sitting (apart from possibly Hercules The Snail when I was 4). What an unputdownable tome ! The working life of Arthur C Throovest, pianist and entertainer, the book conveyed to me something I thought only I felt - that you can have a wonderful life even if your hands are rarely steering the ship. Talking of which, cruises and prisons are some of the interesting places he's worked, with hilarious, disastrous and heart warming results. I particularly found the references to fellow pub and club entertainers he meets who would be lost in the midst of time if it wasn't for Arthur's sharp memory banks. All pre-internet so nothing to see of them there. You would not need to have any prior knowledge of the wonderful Arthur, or his alter ego, Mr Alan Pianoman and his recordings to enjoy this book. It seems any one can turn their hand to their life story these days, but this one is a real cracker.Right up... More > there with the fairly recent Steve Lake book. Ten out of ten.< Less
Mar 5, 2014I've known Alan for many, many years and, on odd occasion (sometimes the occasions were very odd), have had the pleasure of Arthur's company but had no idea what a rich (spiritually rather than financially) and varied career he has enjoyed and endured. I picked up the book anticipating a 'goonesque' mad-cap ride of musical mayhem; it was exactly that and so much more, conveying a deep insight into the great man's mind, a place where not all the synaptic links are wired in a way that neurosurgeons might consider 'normal' or perhaps in places just not wired up at all. The words flowed off the page in such an easy manner that they drew me in, wrapped me up and took me off on Arthur's journeys to watch them unravel at his side, as they happened. What this wonderfully textured history also conveys is the story of a man living his life by following his heart, his instincts and sometimes his head with the constant themes underlying it all of his irrepressible nature; a love of (most) people... More > (often in spite of their shortcomings); an uncompromising sense of fair play and an unshakeable sense of nonsensical fun. It must be said however, that in his journeys Arthur finds himself in many situations where the blunt realities and the blunt behaviours of the blunt people surrounding him are far more nonsensical, bizarre, surreal and utterly incomprehensible than Arthur's mangled mind could ever imagine even in some of his wildest moments. How he deals with these circumstances is a true credit to Arthur and demonstrates the very best that human nature is capable of. This book is far more than the simple relating of a series of anecdotes and is, therefore, far, far greater than the sum of its parts - it has given me a code for living and reaffirmed my love of the man, my love of his talents, and my love of nonsense. If you don't read this book you are missing something - buy it, read it, fill a hole in your soul and smile.< Less
