The first novel featuring Doyle's world famous detective Sherlock Holmes. This novel was originally published by Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887.
An Army doctor, who has just returned to London after being wounded during the war in Afghanistan, is searching for some cheap accommodation to share. He happens upon an old university friend, who introduces him to a researcher on a similar search for lodgings. That man is Sherlock Holmes and former soldier John Watson soon learns that he has special skills that the police rely on to help solve the most confounding mysteries.
A murder has been committed. The only clue is a mysterious word scrawled on the wall by the body. What does this mean? And where does it fit into this mystery?
