The author recounts his childhood upbringing in industrial Stockport, the innocence of boys and girls in rags, poverty, strife and tales of tragedy. The social bonding of working class communities in post WWI years shines through. When the approaching darkness of another war finally consumes him and his Manchester Regiment comrades, for three and a half years, with no glimmer of hope, these men, and others, would endure a LIVING HELL as captives in the death camps of the Japanese Empire.
