In the Summer of 1940 England was at war with Germany while Ireland, just 18 years after the Churchill's brutal Black and Tan campaign against Irish freedom fighters, remained neutral. Churchill needed the Irish ports to protect the Royal Navy's Atlantic convoys which were being devastated by German U-Boats but the Irish Taoiseach remained adamant and would not compromise his declared neutrality which was strengthened by the The Neutrality Act of the United States Congress which successfully kept America out of the war until the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour. Senator Joseph Kennedy, United States Ambassador to the Court of St.James advised Roosevelt to stay out of England's war with Germany. During his time in London he was a frequent visitor to his ancestral home in Dunganstown,Campile. In a "dirty tricks" effort to cowe the Irish into submission Churchill bombed a number of places in Southern Ireland and tried to lay the blame on Germany. One of those places was Campile.
