From 1800 to about 1840, Americans were fond of silhouettes, black paper cut-out portraits that were usually done of a loved one or family member. Although these mysterious little pieces of art, named after a frugal, French finance minister, Etienne de Silhouette, who lived in the 18th century, were pushed aside as photography gained popularity, the art form never really disappeared. Years ago, I was intrigued by silhouettes and shadows in my own art, but it wasn’t until recently that I began pursuing this more seriously. So last year, I started photographing my own shadow as it appeared on sidewalks, hiking trails and buildings in and around the Hudson Valley where I reside. Alongside some of these images are bits of fiction and non-fiction, reflections and meditations made during this introspective exercise.
